Debian 是一個自由的作業系統 (OS) ，提供你安裝在電腦上使用。作業系統就是能讓你的電腦工作的一系列基本程式和實用工具。由於 Debian 採用了 Linux Kernel (作業系統的核心)，但是大部分基礎的作業系統工具都來自於 GNU，因此又稱為 GNU/Linux。

Joerg Jaspert 自 2001 年開始投入 Debian，於 2002 年 4 月成為 Debian Developer。2004 年時，成為 FTPMaster Team 成員之一。 2005 年時，擔任 Debian Account Manager，負責處理新進 Debian 開發者的申請工作。此外，他也是非政府組織 SPI (Software in the Pulic Interest, lnc.)副總裁，其為 1997 年在美國註冊的法人組織，提供Debian 或其他 OpenSource 計畫，如：PostgreSQL, OpenOffice.org, Libreoffice, Drupal... 等之法務服務。

Andrew Lee (李健秋)是一位來自台灣的 Debian 開發者，也是協會理事之一，從10多年前GNU/Linux 中文延伸套件(CLE)計畫開始參與自由軟體開發工作，至今活躍於國際自由軟體計畫在 Debian 內協助維護 Debian 官方台灣映射站台，並活躍於國際 Debian 開發者社群，如Skolelinux(Debian-Edu)、Debian-EeePC, EasyLXDE 等相關計畫，維護數十項 Debian 套件，其中涵蓋整套 LXDE 桌面環境及部份中文相關套件，並長期關注本土少數語言及文化相關議題。

Stefano Zacchiroli 是當前的 Debian 計畫主持人。他於2001年成為 Debian 開發者之一並長期貢獻數個 Debian 核心計畫的服務，例如 Debian 的套件追踪系統和身為 Quality Assurance 團隊的其中一員。他也參與 MANCOOSI 計畫(http://www.mancoosi.org)，這個計畫是歐洲對於 ICT 的相關研究計畫。

經過 24 個月不斷地開發，Debian 計畫自豪地獻上最新的穩定版本 6.0 (Squeeze)。Debian 6.0 是一個自由的作業系統，這是第一次同時提供兩種不同的衍生系統。在 Debian GNU/Linux 之外，Debian GNU/kFreeBSD 在這個版本的出現作為一個技術性的預覽。Debian 6.0 包含了 KDE Plasma 桌面環境及應用程式，還有 GNOME, Xfce, LXDE 桌面環境，以及各種伺務器的應用程式。它同時也相容於 FHS v2.3 以及 LSB v3.2。Debian 能夠在各式各樣的平台上運行，從掌上電腦和手持裝置到超級電腦之間的所有平台都能夠執行。Debian GNU/Linux 總共支援了九個不同的 CPU 架構。

After 24 months of constant development, the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 6.0 (code name 'Squeeze'). Debian 6.0 is a free operating system, coming for the first time in two flavours. Alongside Debian GNU/Linux, Debian GNU/kFreeBSD is introduced with this version as a 'technology preview'. Debian 6.0 includes the KDE Plasma Desktop and Applications, the GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments as well as all kinds of server applications. It also features compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB. Debian runs on computers ranging from palmtops and handheld systems to supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between. A total of nine architectures are supported by Debian GNU/Linux.

Debian Meeting/Gathering/Sightseeing while Martin Michlmayr's 2nd visit to Taiwan.

Dear debian taiwan folks,

[As time is short for this announcement, everyone please help to spread
this news.]

Debian Developer Martin Michlmayr is going to visit Taiwan for
Smartbook/Netbook/Mobile Application Conference Taipei 2009[1] which
organized by III. The event is on 27th Oct Tuesday, and Martin would
give a talk on "How to customize Debian for netbooks and other devices".

He would be arrived on Saturday afternoon. The conference organizer
Regis would help topick him up from the airport and would also arrange
a meeting for the conference speakers on Monday evening. Not sure if
another schedules that has been arranged for Martin.

As a discussion with Martin, he thinks it would be best to meet local
debian people and do sightseeing on Sunday.

So let's meet up together to give Martin a warm greeting and show him
around Taipei on Sunday, shall we? I hope most of you would have time
with us on Sunday. :)

For where to go, we had gained many good ideas for sightseeing from the
offsite fun events while ICOS2009 - mini-DebConf in Taiwan[2]. I guess
we may do some of them depends on weather and time, and we still open
for everyone to recommend something good and special for Martin.

Any volunteer, any good idea?

If you cannot join us for sightseeing in the afternoon, we still welcome
you to join us for meeting[3] during dinner time on Sunday. Place and
time would update later on the wiki page, any suggestions are welcome.

The Software Liberty Association of Taiwan (SLAT) is featuring amini-DebConf during ICOS 2009 – International Conference on Open Sourcein Taipei in September, 2009.

Taiwan is a beautiful country with a strong IT industry.

We just havetwo DDs in Taiwan since DebConf9 and at least 4 other DDs will come fromother countries during ICOS, so it is a great opportunity to have amini-DebConf in Taiwan.

Please join us in Taipei on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of September,2009.

Debian 計劃高興地宣布在經歷了 22 個月堅持不懈地開發之後，Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 版(代號Lenny)正式發布了。Debian GNU/Linux 是一個自由的作業系統，它支持 12 種處理器架構並帶有KDE、Gnome、Xfce 和 LXDE 桌面環境。同時它和 FHS v2.3 兼容，其軟體針對 LSB 3.2 版開發。

Debian GNU/Linux
可以在多種電腦上運行，從掌上機和手持系統到超級電腦，在它們之間的幾乎任何機型都可以。它支持十二種架構：Sun SPARC (sparc)、HP
Alpha (alpha)、Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc)、Intel IA-32 (i386)、IA-64
(ia64)、HP PA-RISC (hppa)、MIPS (mips, mipsel)、ARM (arm, armel)、IBM S/390
(s390) 以及 AMD64 和 INTEL EM64T (amd64)。

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny 加入了對 Marvell 的 Orion 平台的支持，它被用于許多存儲設備。所支持的存儲設備包括 QNAP Turbo Station、HP mv2120 和 Buffalo Kurobox Pro。另外，Lenny 現在支持多種網路筆記型電腦(Netbook)，特別是華碩出品的 Eee PC。Lenny 還包含了用于 Emdebian 的編譯工具，用它可以對 Debian 原始碼包進行交叉編譯並收縮，使之適用于嵌入式 ARM 系統。

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny 包括了新的 ARM EABI 移植，armel。這個新的移植可以更有效地使用現代和未來的 ARM 處理器。因此，老的 ARM 移植 (arm) 就過時了。

本次發布包括了多種升級過的套件，比如 K 桌面環境 3.5.10 (KDE)、升級的 GNOME 桌面環境 2.22.2、Xfce
4.4.2 桌面環境、LXDE 0.3.2.1、GNUstep 桌面 7.3、X.Org 7.3、OpenOffice.org
2.4.1、GIMP 2.4.7、Iceweasel 3.0.6 (去除品牌版本的 Mozilla Firefox)、Icedove
2.0.0.19 (去除品牌版本的 Mozilla Thunderbird)、PostgreSQL 8.3.6、MySQL 5.1.30 和
5.0.51a、GNU 編譯器集合 (GCC) 4.3.2、Linux 核心 2.6.26 版、Apache 2.2.9、Samba
3.2.5、Python 2.5.2 和 2.4.6、Perl 5.10.0、PHP 5.2.6、Asterisk
1.4.21.2、Emacs 22、Inkscape 0.46、Nagios 3.06、Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0
及 domU 支持)、OpenJDK 6b11，以及超過 23,000 個其他完全可用的套件(從 12,000 個源碼包編譯而成)。

由于集成 X.Org 7.3，X server 可以對絕大多數硬體進行自動配置。新引入的套件可以完全地支持 NTFS
文件系統，並且能夠直接使用絕大多數多媒體按鍵。透過 swfdec 或 Gnash 插件可以支持 Adobe® Flash®
格式的文件。對筆記型電腦的支持得到了全面提升，比如 CPU
頻率自動調節的原生支持。新加入的幾個遊戲可用來消磨閒暇時光，包括解謎遊戲以及第一人稱射擊遊戲。還有值得一提的是新增加的 goplay，它是一個圖形化遊戲管理器，提供了過濾器、搜尋、抓屏以及對 Debian 中的遊戲進行介紹等功能。

由 Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 新加入和更新版本的 OpenJDK，GNU Java 編譯器，GNU Java 字節碼解釋器，Classpath 和其他自由版本的 Sun 的 Java 科技使我們可以在 Debian 的 main 軟體倉庫下發布基于 Java 的應用程序了。

系統安全方面的改進有在安裝後第一次啟動之前就安全所有安全更新、減少標準安裝 setuid root 可執行文件和打開的端口，以及使用
GCC 加強特性編譯多個對安全有嚴格要求的套件。其他多種軟體也都有特別的改進，比如 PHP 現在已經使用 Suhosin 的加強補丁編譯。

對于非英語母語的使用者，包管理系統目前已經支持套件描述的翻譯，如果已經翻譯，它會自動顯示使用者母語版本的套件描述。

Debian GNU/Linux 可以用多種介質進行安裝，比如 DVD、CD、USB 閃存和軟驅以及網路。GNOME
是缺省的桌面環境，包含在第一張 CD 中。其他桌面環境 — KDE、XFce 或 LXDE — 則可以透過兩張新的替代 CD
映射站台進行安裝。同樣還提供 Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 的多架構安裝 CD 和
DVD，用它們可以從一張光碟上安裝多種架構的電腦；同時本發行還提供藍光光碟，這就讓在一張安裝磁碟上提供一個架構的全部軟體成為可能。

除常規的安裝，Debian GNU/Linux 也可以直接使用而無需安裝。這種特殊的映射站台也稱為 live 映射站台，可用于 CD、USB 閃存以及多種形式的網路啟動。起步階段只提供 amd64 和 i386 架構的 Live 映射站台。

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 的安裝過程也已經從多個方面進行了改進：在多個其他改進中，重新加入了對從多張 CD 或 DVD
進行安裝的支持，某些設備需要的固件可以從可移動介質上加載，還支持透過布萊葉顯示器進行安裝。安裝程序的啟動過程同樣也得到很多關注：可以在圖形介面上
選擇安裝前端和桌面環境，同時也能選擇專家或救援模式。Debian GNU/Linux 的安裝系統目前已經被翻譯成 63 種語言。

Debian GNU/Linux 現在已經可以透過 bittorrent (推薦使用)、jigdo 或 HTTP 方式下載；更多信息請參見光碟上的 Debian GNU/Linux。很快多個供應商就將開始提供 DVD、CD-ROM 以及藍光光碟。

對絕大多數的配置來說，從先前版本即 Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (代號 Etch) 升級到 Debian
GNU/Linux 5.0 可以由 aptitude 包管理工具自動進行，一定程度上也可以用 apt-get
包管理工具進行。一如往常，Debian GNU/Linux 系統可以平穩無痛地升級，沒有任何必須的當機時間，但強烈建議事先閱讀發行注記，以便了解可能的問題，並獲取詳細的安裝和升級指示。本發行注記將在發行之後的數週內進行更新，並將翻譯成其他語言。

開發者，在2008年12月26日的一場不幸的車禍中去世。Thiemo 透過多種方式參與了 Debian。他維護著多個套件並且是 MIPS 的
Debian 移植的主要支持者。他還是我們核心組及 Debian 安裝程序組的成員。他的貢獻遠遠超出Debian 項目。他還致力于 Linux
核心的 MIPS 移植以及 qemu 的 MIPS 仿真等工作，同時還參與多個小項目，這裡難以一一述及。

我們將永遠懷念 Thiemo 的工作、奉獻、廣泛的技術知識以及同其他人分享的能力。Thiemo 的貢獻不會被遺忘。Thiemo 工作的高標準我們永難企及。
