【8/25 KaLUG】DRBL on Ubuntu 以及 pdfsam, Scratch 經驗分享

本次八月份的 KaLUG 例行聚會有兩個主題：

Ubuntu Linux 之 DRBL 安裝 - Ding-I Yu (DIY)
pdfsam 以及 Scratch 使用經驗分享 - Menterning

DIY 先生這次帶來的『Ubuntu Linux 之 DRBL 安裝』，正好與北部 Fedora.tw 在同日聚會所講的『Fedora 7 上實作 DRBL 與 Clonezilla』互相呼應，也代表著 DRBL 在近來所受到的矚目。DRBL (Diskless Remote Boot in Linux) 是國網中心自由軟體實驗室的開發成果，可以架設一個分散式的管理伺服器，伺服器僅負責儲存設備，而客戶端電腦則負責各種運算。此種架構非常適合用在學校的電腦教室。

而 DIY 這次帶來的是自己在將 DRBL 在 Ubuntu 上使用的經驗，包括安裝前準備、注意事項、步驟以及設定等。

而 Menterning 則要介紹 pdfsam 以及 Scratch。

pdfsam 是一套可以非常容易使用的合併、拆解 PDF 工具，其中包含了文字介面版本 (console) 以及圖形化界面板本 (GUI)。而 Scratch 則是 MIT (麻省理工學院) 發展的一套新語言，適用於八歲以上的兒童學習數學以及計算能力，藉由這些學習也可以加強他們對於設計流程的認知。

新的分享時間又到了，這週 Arne Götje (高盛華) 先生要解說他的 CJK-Unifonts
計畫使用的新技術以及展示新字體。

中日韓不同地區的使用者雖然都使用相同漢字，但總是因地域區別，有些字的寫法
跟筆劃不全然相同，所以很難做出一套完全適合各地區口味 Unicode 的字型。有
個叫 TrueType Collections (TTC) 的技術，雖然本來是由 Microsoft 提出的，
但現在這個技術也在開放原始碼的世界內可以使用了。

這個分享會將重心放在如何在 CJK-Unifonts 計畫內使用 TTC 技術，也會展示即
將完成準備釋出的新字體會怎麼同時滿足中日韓三地的口味。

Since CJK users in different regions use sometimes different glyph
shapes for the same character, it is very difficult to implement true
Pan-CJK Unicode fonts. One method is called TrueType Collections (TTC),
originally introduced by Microsoft, now this technology is also
available for the OpenSource world.
The talk will focus about the TTC technology and how this will be
implemented into the CJK-Unifonts project. It will also give a preview
of the upcoming release, which will use this technology to fulfill the
goal of being a set of Pan-CJK Unicode fonts.

【8/25 Fedora Taiwan】Fedora 7 上實作 DRBL 與 Clonezilla

Fedora 台灣愛用者社群八月份的活動即將在 8/25 舉辦。本次活動分享的主題為『Fedora 7 上實作 DRBL 與 Clonezilla』，DRBL 為國內的國家高速網路與計算機中心所發展的 Diskless Remote Boot in Linux (DRBL) 最近受到了國內外的矚目，不僅法國的開放源碼年會(LSM 2007) 邀請國網中心開發團隊前往演講，在 Ubuntu Live 2007 研討會上也有關於 Clonezilla 的演說（註）。

而 Fedora 台灣愛用者社群八月份的活動則要分享如何在 Fedora 7 上實做 DRBL 以及 Clonezilla，有興趣的朋友千萬別錯過。請持續關注 FTUG論壇。

這個月的 KaLUG 聚會由台灣 PostgreSQL 社群的郭朝益 (Chao) 來講『從 pgAdmin III 介面功能淺談 PostgreSQL 管理』。

PostgreSQL 是一套功能強大的開放源碼資料庫系統，之前在 KaLUG 聚會的時候，Chao 就講了許多關於 PostgreSQL 優勢，而最近在他的 Blog 中的文章也指出 PostgreSQL 使用 SELECT 指令的速度不亞於 MySQL。

這次邀請 Chao 來講 pgAdmin III 是平常在 KaLUG 中比較少提及的主題，希望藉由這次介紹，可以引起大家對 PostgreSQL 的興趣。
