GTK+ will have both a new input section and a new output section, for
i18n enhancement. I'm not clear how much of this is called gscript, but
I think it is just the rendering section. The current gscript code is
certainly just for rendering. I have been playing with the preliminary
code, and it seems interesting so far. You may notice the Cantonese
output has a character missing in the screenshot, as Big5 and CNS have
not been included in the character code translations. I think this is
more than just an issue of work still to be done. If you merge GB2312,
Big5 and JIS0208 you don't get all the characters in Unicode V3. For
example, a number of Mandarin Chinese characters, and most of the
Cantonese dialect characters are missing. I think a real Unicode font
will be needed to get comprehensive support for the UniHan section of
Unicode. Unicode is a character code, rather than a glyph code. For
UniHan this doesn't matter much, as rendering never changes the way
Chinese characters are written. After disliking Unicode for a long time,
I think V3 finally looks promising, and I think a UniHan font is the way
to go.
