I also use glibc2.1.1 deb package (2.1.1-10) but seems no problem
in mbstowcs function. What locale do you use? It should be OK
to use zh_TW.Big5 locale. If you use zh_CN.GB2312 locale, please
note that the line

alias   GB2312//                EUC-CN//

should be added in the /usr/lib/gconv/gconv-modules file. See
